The new cataloging standard, RDA: Resource Description and Access, initially scheduled for release in its final draft form in summer 2008, was released on November 17, 2008. Several revisions to key components were posted to the RDA website during the last week of October, including a revised prospectus and outline, and documents showing RDA mappings to FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) and FRAD (Functional Requirements for Authority Data). A new website is being built at rdaonline.org.
RDA is being developed and written first as an online database product to incorporate the features and functionalities of online access. Once the final draft is made available online, there will be a three-month comment period during which access to RDA will be free. Subsequent subscription terms from the co-publishers (The American Library Association, the Canadian Library Association, and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) have not yet been finalized.
Librarians should participate in the public comment process, which will be open from publication through February of 2009. Get together with Nylink metadata expert Lynne Graziadei and your fellow librarians to learn more about the coming changes, formulate your response to the draft, and find out how to make your voice heard, at one of Nylink’s free Brown Bag lunch gatherings:
You bring your lunch, ideas and experiences and we'll provide the drinks and tasty treats.
This event is free and open to anyone interested in talking, listening and learning.
